Indian Education System : A Success or Failure
Education has a crucial role in the development of a person and subsequently, the entire nation. Though the history of the Indian education system has some positive examples to exhibit, it has been receiving some flak from the world nowadays and the fact can't be denied that we are falling behind in the field of education for quite some decades now.
A major shift in the education system can be observed since the pre and post-British rule till today in India. Initially, children were educated in Gurukuls which was later modified and the modern education system was introduced.
After India became independent, the constitution committed six fundamental rights, of which one was the Right of Education.
Current Issues in Education of India
The current issues with the education system in India:
- Expenditure on education- More funds should be allotted for the development of the education system in India. In the past few years, many beneficial Steps have been taken in this direction and if the same is continued India may soon be overcome the current challenges.
- Student-teacher ratio - The number of students in search of proper education is way more in comparison to the teachers and faculty available. Thus, qualified teachers must be appointed to impart knowledge to the future of the country.
- Students studying abroad- There are many students who choose to study abroad because of these issues in the Indian education system. The concerned authorities must work on them and students must also choose to stay, learn in India and empower the country through their knowledge.
- Legacy not honour : In our country, we measure talent by the greats of the students. It is not uncommon to consider a student fetching over 90% marks as "brilliant" while those getting average marks are considered weaklings with no substantial future. Bookish knowledge is passed down to generations and generations to students.
- Lack of Interest : 90% of the education is theoretical with minuscule scope for practical learning and research on the part of the pupils. There is no space for creative learning and thinking and students are always bound to a specific syllabus and are not really encouraged to go out and about their seems. Such times and interesting mode of teaching not only help the students but also brings out a sense of real interest in them to pursue the subject in a different manners.
- Lack of Individuality : The objective of education is to educate and empower people to achieve desired success in their lives. Not every kid wants to become a rocket scientist when she/he grows up, he or she new want to become a poet, or a singer, or a sportsperson, or a public speaker.
- Teaching Methodology : Our teaching methods are dated. We still use blackboard and chalk as the only mode of teaching. Even though there has been a wave of the switch to the e-Learning method, but that has happened in a very small proportion.
- Quality of education : There is a major difference in the quality of education being provided in the rural and urban areas of the country. Steps must be taken to standardize the quality of education across India so that everyone can get equal and unbiased knowledge and opportunities to grow.
- Making education affordable : There are Government schools and educational institutions which are affordable but lake of terms of infrastructure and quality. On the other hand, private education institutions which demand high fees and have better infrastructure and equipment to study. This disparity Masti of the pond and the government must make education affordable and accessible for all.
Schemes & Campaigns to Boost Education System in India
Schemes introduced by Indian government to enhance education system in India:-
- Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan - Launched in 2001 with an aim to produce 'Education to All', straightening the existing infrastructure of schools and construction of new schools.
- Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan- It is a flagship scheme aiming at enhancing secondary Education and increasing the enrollment rate by providing a secondary school within a reasonable distance of every home.
- Beti Bachao Beti Padhao - The scheme to promote girl child education in India.
How effective is the Indian Education System?
India is a country with more than one billion people, and just one-third of them can read. Rapidly growing size of population, shortages of teachers, books, and basic facilities, and insufficient public funds to cover education costs are some of the nation's toughest challenges.
Conclusion
Education needs to be available to all, but overall development needs to be a part of curriculum too. The need of the hour is to develop a system where in kids are not forced to be showpieces of their hard work in the form of a grading system. Allowed them to be curious, ask questions and take up subjects they are really interested in early in their careers. Teaching methodology should be changed to modern methods of teaching. The government along with teachers and parents need to work together on this to start implementing it at the base level.
"Education is the process in which we discover that learning adds quality to our lives. Learning must be experienced."
